You know what I don't enjoy doing? Well, that would be hems.
You know what I get asked to do as a favour quite often? Yes, that would be hems.
For me doing the hems of a garment is like the washing up part of cooking meal. The important but not fun part. Some people seem to think that because I sew things that somehow I will enjoy mending their clothes. This might sound quite mean but having previously shared a house with a bunch of guys for a few years I am pretty hard hearted and firm about saying no to these sorts of requests. (What am I, your nanny?)
However, there are people that I
enjoy doing hems for, these would be people that I care about, that I know would also do similar things they didn't enjoy to help me out, people that I owe bigtime, people that will do me a favour in turn. In fact, people like my lovely mother.
So on my desk at the moment is a long silk jacket and dress that my mother bought in India. I am shortening the hems for her. It is pretty tedious and fiddly. Silk can be a b____! It shows up any mistakes like a flashing light. But I don't mind because I know it is for my mother who would, and has, done a million things for me, and it is nice to have a chance to do something small for her.
This is what I cut off. I hope perhaps to get an evening bag out of it?

Here I am ironing the hems. There is a tea towel on the floor because I spilled water when filling the iron. I don't much enjoy ironing either ;)
